What If Everyone Ordered Different Amounts?
Equal splitting is fast, but if one person had a $12 salad while another had a $45 steak, it's not exactly fair. Here's what a per-item split would look like on a $200 tab between 2 people:
| Person | Order | Equal Split | Fair Split |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alex | $140.00 | $100.00 | $168.00 |
| Jordan | $60.00 | $100.00 | $72.00 |
The difference between equal and fair can be $96.00 per person. For a truly fair split based on individual orders, use our Bill Split Calculator.
Tips for Splitting a $200 Bill
- Decide before ordering. Agree on equal vs per-item before the food arrives to avoid awkwardness at the end.
- Split tax and tip proportionally. If you ordered 40% of the food, pay 40% of the tax and tip — not an equal share.
- Round up, not down. If each person's share is $120.00, round to $120.00. Servers prefer clean numbers and the difference is negligible.
- One person pays, others Venmo. Most restaurants prefer one payment. Have one person put their card down and collect from everyone else digitally.
