What If Everyone Ordered Different Amounts?

Equal splitting is fast, but if one person had a $12 salad while another had a $45 steak, it's not exactly fair. Here's what a per-item split would look like on a $60 tab between 6 people:

PersonOrderEqual SplitFair Split
Alex$14.00$10.00$16.80
Jordan$7.36$10.00$8.83
Sam$8.50$10.00$10.20
Riley$7.64$10.00$9.17
Taylor$7.20$10.00$8.64
Casey$15.30$10.00$18.36

The difference between equal and fair can be $9.72 per person. For a truly fair split based on individual orders, use our Bill Split Calculator.

Tips for Splitting a $60 Bill

  • Decide before ordering. Agree on equal vs per-item before the food arrives to avoid awkwardness at the end.
  • Split tax and tip proportionally. If you ordered 40% of the food, pay 40% of the tax and tip — not an equal share.
  • Round up, not down. If each person's share is $12.00, round to $12.00. Servers prefer clean numbers and the difference is negligible.
  • One person pays, others Venmo. Most restaurants prefer one payment. Have one person put their card down and collect from everyone else digitally.
  • Check for auto-gratuity. Many restaurants add 18% automatically for parties of 6+. Don't double-tip.
