About
SplitGenius Editorial
SplitGenius publishes opinionated, data-grounded guides and free calculators for rent, splitting, and personal-finance decisions. Founded in 2026 by Baljeet Aulakh in Cleveland, Ohio. We are a small team that ships under one byline.
How we write
Every guide we publish meets four standards before it ships:
- The first sentence is the answer — readers who only read one line still get what they came for.
- Every numeric claim links to a primary source. We cite HUD, BLS, Census, IRS, and a small number of vetted private datasets (Apartment List, Zillow). We never repeat a number we cannot trace to a public dataset.
- We update
dateModifiedwhen we change content — not when we change code. The "last updated" date you see is real. - We have opinions and we name them. The 30% rule is wrong for incomes under $80K in HCOL cities. Splitting rent evenly across unequal rooms is unfair. Every guide tells you what we think, why, and shows the math.
